Picnic and paddles spots in Yorkshire (Gargrave)

Picnic and paddle spots in Yorkshire

With Summer trying its hardest to appear the question that’s on everyone’s lips is ‘where can we go for a paddle?’ With the next one being ‘but where’s not too busy?!’ So I’ve pulled together some fab picnic and paddle spots in Yorkshire for you to enjoy.

One of our favourite things to do is pack up a picky tea and head off on a mini adventure before bedtime. Combining a little walk, with a paddle in the water and a picnic is the perfect FREE fun family activity. Dip your toes in these Yorkshire waters!

Here are my top picnic and paddle spots to visit locally;

Gargrave – prime picnic and fishing spot

The village green in Gargrave is the ideal place for letting little ones burn off energy before bedtime. The grassed area is huge so perfect for ball games, running races and right next to the river. The water is shallow in this section through the village and pebbly. The lower set of stepping stones are great fun to go back and forth over too. Take a net and bucket as you are bound to find some little fishes in there.

Yockenthwaite – a paddle spot in the Yorkshire Dales

Way up in the Yorkshire Dales is Yockenthwaite, a tiny little village at the source of the River Wharfe. There are various places to pull up and park alongside the river. Open the boot and have yourself a car picnic after your paddle. The river here is bed rock so lots of little pools to discover. A beautiful deserted spot for a real taste of the rural life. Best to go early summer or after a rainy day as it does get very low after a period of dry weather.

Sutton paddling pool

The paddling pool at Sutton in Craven park is a brilliant spot for the kids to meet their friends. With plenty of space to play, a toddler playground as well as a playground designed for older children, plus public facilities you could stay here all day.

Parking is free on the streets around. Also check social media to make sure it’s filled before you go as dates differ each year.

Malham Cove – the most picturesque paddle spot in Yorkshire

Malham Beck, at the bottom of Malham Cove is the most picturesque paddle spot. The walk from the village is 1.5 miles but it is a pram friendly route.

Get there late afternoon once the crowds have dispersed and you have the perfect picnic spot. With mini islands to hop across onto, the stone bridge and the little hills to run up and down this sure is an adventure spot.
