Coldstones Cut is the highest and largest public art work in Yorkshire! How cool is that! Situated over looking Coldstones Quarry in Greenhow. With 360 views over the rest of Nidderdale this is a fabulous walk for everyone!
There is a small free car park just off the main road through Greenhow. From here the path leads gradually up the hillside to the sculpture. The path is stoney but you would probably be able to manage a pram up there.
This public art work by Andrew Sabin “combines the curious conventions of a contemporary streetscape with the brute impressiveness of ancient stone block constructions.” according to the website! You can find out more about that here – The Coldstones Cut. You can explore the sculpture by following the winding paths that lead up to two higher platforms. Up here you will be offered even more spectacular views.
Plenty of information boards are dotted around. These tell you more about the heritage of the area as well as the local landscape formation and the wildlife. The main draw for us though, with 2 little boys, is the fact that you can watch the dump trucks in the quarry. Coldstones Quarry, in Greenhow is still a working quarry so there are construction vehicles about. Occasionally, if you are lucky you may hear the siren go off and witness a blast!
What you will also notice up at Coldstones Cut is the huge yellow bike which was placed in homage to the Tour de Yorkshire. This area of Nidderdale is huge hot spot for cyclists.
To the other side of the car park is Toft House Lime Kilns which is another free place to explore.
